"Escape"

During the war of 1812, militiaman Christopher Lesnett was with the American army in an engagement with the British near Detroit. After being trapped by superior British and Indian forces, the army was forced to surrender.  As the white flag (actually a white tablecloth) was being run up, Christopher and another man declared that they would never surrender.  They broke ranks, ran and hid in the timber, expecting to get away after nightfall. The Indians saw them going, gave chase, found and killed the other man, but Christopher made good his escape.
